For many bakers, the Aldi baking machines cross the competitive line. "We are not against Aldi selling bread," says Peter Becker, a Hamburg baker and the confederation's president. "But it's unfair for them to say that it's somehow better or different than the packaged stuff they sell on their shelves." Adding insult, the automat goods cost about half the price of most bakeries' fresh bread.

As shoppers stopped to purchase bread from an automat in a suburban Frankfurt Aldi one recent afternoon, many said they weren't terribly bothered by the distinction. "I'm not sure whether it's freshly baked," said Sarifa Naseri, a mother of two who bought a mix of white and rye rolls. "But for the price, it tastes pretty good and they're always kind of warm."
