no catholic ’third way’

André Alves: there is no catholic „third way”:
State intervention should be regarded as the last resort. We shouldn’t look at the state as the primary means of tackling social problems. If we fall into that trap, we will make the problems worse. The first basic unit is the family, after that there is the community, we have voluntary associations, and we shouldn’t remove the obligation to tackle poverty from them and give it to the burocratic structure of the state – says André Avezedo Alves, the professor of the Catholic University of Portugal.
